Norman Pickell graduated from the University of Windsor Law School in 1972 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1974. As a lawyer, Norman’s preferred areas of practice are real estate, wills and estate planning, powers of attorney, elder law, estate administration, business and corporate law. 

In appropriate circumstances, Norman makes house calls, whether to your home or to the hospital.

Norman is also a mediator, with experience mediating various types of conflict. For over 30 years, Norman had extensive experience in family law and other civil litigation matters. Norman was a Small Claims Court Judge for 35 years. In that capacity, he presided over trials and settlement conferences.

Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut

From July 2008 until September 2013, Norman Pickell had the honour and privilege of being the Integrity Commissioner of Nunavut. It was a 5-year appointment by the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut.

As an Independent Officer of the Legislative Assembly, the Integrity Commissioner provides advice to all Members of the Legislative Assembly concerning their obligations under the Integrity Act.

Part of Norman’s duties as Integrity Commissioner included reviewing the conduct of the Members of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut if a complaint was made and making a report to the Legislative Assembly. In that capacity, he conducted 4 reviews, two of which involved the conduct of cabinet ministers and one of which involved the conduct of the premier. While most of Norman’s work as Integrity Commissioner could be done from Goderich, Ontario, some travel to Nunavut was necessary.

Community Involvement

Norman Pickell is a great believer in being involved in the community. Since moving to Goderich in 1972, Norman has been very active in his church, the Rotary Club, the local hospital, public education and other organizations.

Norman served on the Board of Directors of the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital located in Goderich, Ontario from January 2003 until June 2012. He was the Chair of the Board from June 2004 until June 2007.

Norman is a member and a Past President of the Goderich Rotary Club. He is also a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Norman is also a member and Past President of the Huron Law Association. 

Norman has been Chairperson of the Church Board at North Street United Church, now Lakeshore United Church, in Goderich, Ontario for a total of four years – in 1975 and 1976 and again in 1999 and 2000.

For nine years (from 1988 to 1997), Norman was a School Trustee on the Huron County Board of Education (which is now part of the Avon Maitland District School Board).

Personal

Norman Pickell and his wife, Nancy, have lived in Goderich, Ontario since 1972. They are the proud parents of three grown children and five grandchildren. Norman’s hobbies include camping, travelling and cooking. For over 25 years, Norman was an avid airplane pilot.
