In this area of law,

  • we act for vendors and purchasers;
  • we act for borrowers and lenders on mortgage transactions – including private mortgages;
  • we act on transactions involving residential, commercial, farm, cottage and other rural properties;
  • we handle purchases and sales of individual condominium units;
  • we have experience acting on land lease transactions. This is where you own the house, but the house is built on land that you rent.
  • we act for parties involving applications for severances, minor variances and re-zoning applications.
  • we are able to handle real estate transactions throughout Ontario. If you are moving to or from the Huron County area, we would be happy to handle your purchase and your sale.

Buying and selling property is usually an exciting and major event. In fact, for most people, the purchase of a house represents their largest single investment. The area of Real Estate law is complex and requires considerable knowledge and expertise.

The money you spend on legal fees in a real estate file represents a very small percentage of your investment. In fact, if you are selling your property, the real estate commission you pay is usually many times more than what you pay for legal fees. When it comes to legal fees, remember the old saying: “You get what you pay for.”

In 2002, Norman was a presenter at a Real Estate Seminar in Toronto put on by the Ontario Bar Association. The topic of his presentation was The Purchase and Sale of Farms in Ontario. Some of the issues in his presentation also pertain to the purchase and sale of rural non-farm property. (When reading the paper, please keep in mind that it was written in 2002. Some things – including land values – have changed dramatically. But most of the issues are still relevant.)
